It's the number-one tourist attraction in Houston, and for good reason — it's the official visitor center of NASA's Johnson Space Center, which is where the astronauts actually train and where Mission Control has directed every crewed U.S. spaceflight since Gemini 4.

What Is Space Center Houston?
Two things people often confuse: Space Center Houston is the museum and visitor center. NASA's Johnson Space Center is the actual working NASA facility next door — where astronauts train, missions are controlled, and space hardware is built and tested. You visit both on one ticket: the museum on your own, and Johnson Space Center via the included NASA Tram Tour.
Space Center Houston is operated by a separate nonprofit on land adjacent to NASA's Johnson Space Center. It opened in 1992 and has grown into one of the country's premier science museums, welcoming over a million visitors a year.

Parking on-site is $10 per vehicle. Bring cash or a card.
What to See at Space Center Houston
You could spend a full day here and not see everything. If you're short on time, prioritize:
1. The NASA Tram Tour
This is the highlight, and it's included with your ticket. The tram takes you out onto the actual NASA Johnson Space Center campus to see historic Mission Control (from where Apollo missions were directed), astronaut training facilities, and Rocket Park — home to a real, retired Saturn V rocket lying on its side inside a climate-controlled building. Standing next to it is a religious experience for space fans.
Important: The tram tour can sell out by mid-morning on busy days. Do this first when you arrive.
2. Independence Plaza
An outdoor plaza featuring the mounted Space Shuttle replica Independence perched atop the original Shuttle Carrier Aircraft — a modified 747 that was used to ferry Space Shuttles across the country. You can walk through both the shuttle and the plane.
3. Starship Gallery
The main indoor gallery — home to a real Mercury capsule, a Gemini spacecraft, an Apollo command module (Apollo 17, no less), a lunar rover, and one of the largest displays of authentic moon rocks on Earth. Kids can also touch a real piece of Mars.
4. Mars & Artemis Exhibits
Hands-on interactive exhibits about the current Artemis missions (which will return astronauts to the Moon) and future Mars missions. Great for kids and teens.
5. Astronaut Encounters & Live Presentations
Several times a day, Space Center Houston hosts live presentations by actual astronauts and NASA scientists. Check the daily schedule when you arrive.
Tips for Visiting With Kids
- Arrive early. Doors open at 9 or 10 AM depending on the day. Get there when they open, do the tram first, and you'll beat the crowds.
- Plan for a full day. There's more to do than families expect. Pack snacks and be ready to spend 5–7 hours.
- Bring layers. Some exhibits are heavily air-conditioned; the outdoor tram is Texas-hot in summer.
- Strollers welcome. The whole facility is stroller-accessible, and stroller rentals are available on-site.
- Combine with a Kemah Boardwalk visit. Space Center in the morning, Kemah in the evening = perfect Houston-area family day. They're less than 15 minutes apart.
The Best Time to Visit
Space Center Houston is busiest on holidays, weekends, and summer weekdays. If you have flexibility, aim for:
- Weekday visits during the school year (September–May, avoiding spring break)
- Early morning arrival regardless of the day
- Late fall or early spring if you're coming from out of town
Summer weekends are peak busy season — expect long lines for the tram, potentially sold-out slots, and crowded exhibits by mid-day.
Getting There
Space Center Houston is located at 1601 E NASA Parkway, Houston, TX 77058. It's about 26 miles southeast of downtown Houston (35–45 minutes depending on traffic) and roughly 30 minutes from Hobby Airport.
If you're staying in Seabrook, you're right next door — Space Center Houston is under 10 minutes from Seabrook Escape, which makes for one of the easiest morning drives you'll find on any Houston-area trip.
